How to Choose Outdoor and Garden Furniture for Indian Weather
The best material for outdoor furniture in India is decided by where the piece sits, not by which material is "toughest." Indian weather attacks outdoor furniture three different ways, and no single material resists all three. Ultraviolet radiation breaks down polymers and finishes, which is why polypropylene retained only 47% of its fracture strain after four years of outdoor exposure in one peer-reviewed weathering study. Teak's outdoor durability is chemistry, not wood. In USDA Forest Products Laboratory testing, untreated teak heartwood lost under 1% of its weight to termites, while the same teak with its extractives removed lost 13.5% to 15.6%. Those extractives leach out with water over time.
Natural cane belongs under a roof, full stop. Rattan showed 13.79% to 27.39% volumetric swelling between oven-dry and saturated, and rated only moderately durable against decay fungi.
Polypropylene and FRP are the honest answers for full exposure, provided they are UV-stabilised and, in FRP's case, properly gelcoated. Neither is a natural material and neither recycles well.
The contract seating standard does not cover outdoor furniture. EN 16139:2025 explicitly excludes outdoor seating, so "commercial grade" tells you nothing about weather performance.
The three things Indian weather does to outdoor furniture
Understanding the failure mechanisms is what turns a guess into a decision. There are three, and they operate independently.
Ultraviolet radiation degrades polymers and finishes. UV breaks chemical bonds in the surface layer of any organic material, whether that is a plastic chair, the resin in a composite, or the lacquer on a wooden one. India's UV load is severe: climate averages for Bengaluru put the average maximum UV index at 12 across February through October, dropping only to 10 in the remaining three months. Sustained humidity and rain swell natural materials and feed fungi. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory records that wood at 45% relative humidity settles at about 8.3% moisture content, while the same wood at 80% relative humidity settles at about 15.7%. Airborne salt turns corrosion from slow to fast. This is the one most inland buyers underestimate and most coastal buyers underestimate more. ISO 9223:2012 identifies the key factors in atmospheric corrosion as the temperature-humidity complex, sulfur dioxide pollution and airborne salinity, and notes that temperature is also an important factor for corrosion in areas outside the temperate macroclimatic zone. India sits outside that zone.
A material that handles one of these and not the others is not weatherproof. It is weatherproof for one variable.
Start with exposure, not with material
Before comparing anything, classify the space. Three zones, and each has a genuinely different answer.
Zone 1: Covered. A balcony under the floor above, a deep verandah, a roofed courtyard. Rain reaches it only as blown spray. Direct sun reaches it for part of the day or not at all. Ambient humidity is the same as outdoors. Almost everything works here, including natural cane and finished solid wood, and this is where you can buy on looks and comfort rather than on survival.
Zone 2: Semi-covered. A pergola, a retractable awning, a terrace with a partial roof, a courtyard with tree cover. Rain reaches it in heavy monsoon. Sun reaches it for hours a day. This is the zone where powder-coated metal and UV-stabilised synthetics belong, and where natural cane starts to be a maintenance commitment rather than a purchase.
Zone 3: Fully exposed. An open roof terrace, pavement seating, a lawn with no tree cover. Direct sun all day, direct rain all monsoon, and if you are within a couple of kilometres of the sea, salt on top. Only three material families survive here without constant intervention: cast aluminium, fibre reinforced plastic, and UV-stabilised polypropylene treated as a consumable.
Coastal proximity overrides everything. A piece that would last a decade in Bengaluru can fail in two seasons in Chennai or Kochi, and that is not the furniture's fault.
Metal: the environment decides, not the metal
Metal outdoor furniture does not really fail as metal. It fails wherever the coating is breached, and then the environment goes to work on what is underneath. This is why the useful question is never "steel or aluminium" first. It is "where will this live, and what finish protects it."
ISO 9223:2012 classifies atmospheric corrosivity into six categories from C1 (very low) to CX (extreme), and specifies first-year corrosion rates for each. The gradient is stark.

Field measurement bears this out. A 2024 study in Materials by Paterlini and colleagues at Politecnico di Milano exposed coupons at two Italian sites. Carbon steel in urban Milan classified as C2. The same carbon steel roughly ten metres from the sea at Bonassola corroded at 75.8 to 79.3 micrometres per year, placing it in category C4 to C5. Hot-dip galvanized steel ran at about 0.68 micrometres per year in the urban location and 4.4 to 9.4 micrometres per year at the marine site. Stainless steel showed only superficial staining in the marine exposure.
Where aluminium earns its premium. Compare the C5 row: carbon steel loses 650 to 1,500 grams per square metre per year, aluminium 5 to 10. That is roughly two orders of magnitude less mass. Aluminium is not immune, and ISO 9223 is careful to note that aluminium experiences both uniform and localized corrosion, that its table values are calculated as uniform corrosion only, and that maximum pit depth may be a better indicator of actual damage. Where cast iron still wins. Mass and stability. A cast iron base does not move when a chair is shoved or a gust catches an umbrella, and a light aluminium set on an open roof will. Where mild steel belongs. Powder-coated mild steel is the workhorse of covered and semi-covered outdoor seating, and the reason the Tolix chair has been a café default for a century. It is light, stackable, strong and affordable. It also has the widest gap between its best case and its worst case, because everything depends on the coating staying intact. Two honest caveats on all of this: those studies were run in Italy on bare and galvanized coupons rather than on finished powder-coated furniture, and India has no equivalent published dataset that we could verify. Read the numbers as a ranking of environments, not as a prediction for a specific chair.
Wood outdoors: teak's durability is chemistry, and it leaches
Solid wood outdoors is not one question, it is two. Does it resist decay, and does it stay flat?
On decay, the answer is entirely about heartwood extractives. A 2018 study by Hassan and colleagues, co-authored with the USDA Forest Products Laboratory, put teak heartwood through AWPA E1 termite testing against Heterotermes indicola over 28 days. Untreated teak heartwood lost under 1% of its weight in both choice and no-choice tests. The same teak with its extractives chemically removed lost 15.6% in the choice test and 13.5% in the no-choice test. The researchers attribute teak's natural durability largely to the presence of quinones in the heartwood, and measured mean extractive content at 5.5%.
Three consequences follow, and they are the reason cheap teak garden furniture disappoints.
Sapwood is not durable. The extractives live in the heartwood. A piece that includes pale sapwood has included wood with essentially no chemical protection, and it will fail at those boards first.
Young plantation teak has less of what matters. The same paper notes that teak durability differs by site of origin and by stand management practice. Fast-grown plantation stock is not the same product as slow-grown timber, even though both are legitimately labelled teak.
The protection leaches out. In the same study, teak extractives transferred into southern pine cut termite weight loss from around 25 to 28% down to 3.6%, but after 14 days of leaching, weight loss rose significantly again, from 5.53% to 10.52% in southern pine and from 7.36% to 17.91% in cottonwood. Water carries the chemistry away over time. That is what a monsoon does, every year.
On dimensional stability, the second question, all wood moves. The Wood Handbook is explicit that moisture content changes can be retarded, but not prevented, by protective coatings such as varnish, lacquer or paint, and that tangential shrinkage is about twice as great as radial shrinkage, which is the combination that produces cupping. Teak is among the most stable timbers available at 2.5% radial and 5.8% tangential shrinkage. The practical rule. Finished acacia, mango and sheesham are indoor and covered-outdoor woods. Teak heartwood is the only common furniture timber with a genuine claim to full exposure, and it will still grey, check and need refinishing. Anything sold as outdoor wood at a price that does not support teak heartwood is either sapwood, a different species, or expecting you to maintain it. Cane and rattan: beautiful, and genuinely not an outdoor material
This is the one where the honest answer disappoints people, so it is worth being direct.
A 2022 study in Forests by Ahmed, Hosseinpourpia, Brischke and Adamopoulos measured two rattan species across diameter classes. Volumetric swelling from oven-dry to fully saturated ranged from 13.79% for the denser Calamus zollingeri at 20 mm diameter up to 27.39% for Calamus ornatus at 15 mm. An eight-week decay test to EN 113-2 against the white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor found the acacia-adjacent picture: moderate durability at best, with the denser cane performing better on both mould rating and mass loss.
Those swelling figures are the outer bound, measured after 14 days submerged in water, not a terrace condition. What they establish is the scale: cane's potential movement is several times that of a stable hardwood. Combine that with a tightly woven structure where air cannot circulate and moisture cannot escape, and monsoon produces exactly what you would expect, which is sagging seats and mould in the weave.
Natural cane belongs in Zone 1, under a genuine roof, with air moving through it. Polypropylene and FRP: the synthetics, honestly compared
Polypropylene is light, stackable, washable, rustproof and cheap. It is also the material that measurably degrades in sunlight. A 2022 study in Polymers by Kim, Lee, Kim and Choi ran a four-year outdoor weathering test at Seosan, Korea, accumulating 1,020 MJ/m² of UV irradiation. Polypropylene retained 47% of its fracture strain, the best result of the four polymers tested, with the dose required to halve fracture strain measured at 309 MJ/m². Losing half your fracture strain does not mean the chair breaks; it means the failure mode shifts from flexing under a shock load to cracking. Buy UV-stabilised grades, favour darker pigments which absorb UV rather than transmitting it, and site polypropylene under cover where possible. India's UV load is materially higher than the Korean test site's.
Fibre reinforced plastic is the strongest performer in full exposure and the least understood. A 2025 study in Polymers found that unprotected glass fibre laminates retained 64% of flexural strength after 2,000 hours of continuous UV, with the degraded surface layer measured at just 5.66 micrometres deep. That shallowness is the whole point: FRP's protection is a sacrificial gelcoat layer applied at a wet film thickness of 18 ± 2 mils, hundreds of micrometres thick. The honest limit on both. Neither is a natural material and neither recycles well. A 2022 review in Polymers by Morici and Dintcheva notes that thermoset composite waste is mostly landfilled, because the crosslinked structure cannot be re-melted the way a thermoplastic can. The environmental case for FRP rests on longevity, not circularity.

The care routine for an Indian year
Outdoor furniture is low-maintenance, which is not the same as no-maintenance. Four moments in the year do almost all the work.
Before monsoon (May to June): inspect every metal piece for coating chips and touch them up before the rain arrives, because a breach that goes into monsoon uncoated is where corrosion starts. Check wooden joints and reglue anything slightly loose. Move anything cane-framed under cover for the season.
Through monsoon: dry horizontal surfaces rather than letting water pool, especially on FRP and on any piece with a flat seat. Standing water is what drives blistering and what keeps a weave permanently damp. If a piece can be tipped or stored, tip or store it.
After monsoon (September to October): wash off accumulated grime with mild soap and water. Never use scouring pads, abrasive powders or strong solvents on FRP, powder coat or lacquered wood, all of which lose their protective surface to abrasion. Check the underside of everything, because that is where damp lingers longest.
Before peak sun (January to February): apply a UV-protective wax or sealant to gelcoated FRP, oil any teak that you want to keep golden rather than silver, and check that cushion fabrics have not started chalking.
Two things that apply year-round. Covers help, but only breathable ones: a fully impermeable cover that traps condensation underneath is worse than no cover at all. And coastal homes should rinse metal furniture with fresh water periodically, because the salt film is doing the damage between rain events, not during them.
What to specify when you buy
Name your zone before you shortlist. Covered, semi-covered or fully exposed. Then buy only from that column of the table above.
Ask what the metal finish is and whether touch-up is available. A powder-coated frame is only as durable as your ability to repair a chip. Matched touch-up paint from the maker is worth more than an extra year of warranty.
For wood, ask for heartwood specifically and reject visible sapwood. With teak, that is the entire durability story.
For synthetics, ask whether the polypropylene is UV-stabilised and, for FRP, ask about the gelcoat. Vague answers are answers.
Ignore "commercial grade" as a weather claim.
