Balcony and Terrace Furniture for Indian Homes: What Actually Survives Outside

The furniture that survives on an Indian balcony is decided by one thing before style, budget or brand: how much sky sits above it. A covered balcony with a slab overhead can take cane, wood and cast iron. A fully exposed terrace, taking 87 cm of southwest monsoon rain across June to September and 4 to 7 kWh of solar radiation per square metre per day, will destroy all three. Cast aluminium and Fibre Reinforced Plastic are the two materials that hold up unshaded, and the finish on them decides how long. Get the exposure level right and almost any material choice works. Get it wrong and no amount of care routine saves the piece.

Start With Exposure, Not Style: The Three Levels Every Indian Balcony Falls Into

An exposure ladder is a way of classifying an outdoor space by how much direct sun and rain reaches the furniture, and it is the only useful starting point for a buying decision. Most Indian homes sit at one of three rungs, and the correct material changes completely between them.

Level 1, the covered balcony. A slab or the floor above shields the space. Rain reaches the outer 30 to 60 cm in a driving monsoon shower, and direct sun lands for a couple of hours at most. This is the most forgiving level and the one most Indian apartments have. Cane, solid wood, cast iron and mild steel all work here.

Level 2, the semi-covered terrace. Partial shade from a pergola, a wall, or a neighbouring building. The furniture gets several hours of direct sun and takes rain during a monsoon front. Cast iron rusts here. Cane weakens here. Cast aluminium, FRP and well-finished metal are the honest answers.

Level 3, the fully exposed roof or open terrace. Nothing overhead. The India Meteorological Department puts the long period average of southwest monsoon rainfall over India as a whole at 87 cm for June to September, based on 1971 to 2020 data, and forecast 92% of that figure for 2026. That water lands on the furniture, sits in joints, and drains slowly. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy states that most parts of India receive 4 to 7 kWh of solar radiation per square metre per day. That is a heavy UV and thermal load on any polymer or coating. At Level 3, the shortlist is short: FRP, cast aluminium, and stone.

Why Cast Aluminium Outlasts Cast Iron in the Open

Cast aluminium and cast iron look nearly identical in a Victorian-pattern garden chair. They behave nothing alike in the rain.

ISO 9223:2012, the international standard for classifying atmospheric corrosivity, quantifies the difference. It rates locations from C1 (very low) to CX (extreme) and publishes first-year corrosion loss ranges for each metal. In corrosivity category C4, described as high, carbon steel loses 50 to 80 micrometres per year while aluminium loses 2 to 5. In C5, very high, the figures are 80 to 200 micrometres for carbon steel against 5 to 10 for aluminium. That is roughly an order of magnitude, in the same air, on the same day.

The mechanism behind the gap is that aluminium forms a thin oxide film that re-forms when scratched, while rust on iron flakes and exposes fresh metal underneath. ISO 9223 also notes that aluminium's rate falls after the first year because of passivation, and that pit depth rather than uniform loss is the better indicator of damage on aluminium.

The standard tabulates carbon steel, not cast iron specifically. Cast iron is an iron alloy that rusts by the same electrochemical route, so the direction of the comparison is sound even though the exact numbers are not transferable. India's climate makes this matter more than it would in a dry country. ISO 9223 estimates time of wetness as the hours during which relative humidity exceeds 80% at a temperature above 0°C, and coastal and monsoon-humid Indian cities spend a great deal of the year above that line. Research by Das and Sarkar, published in the ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems in 2021, mapped Indian corrosivity using ISO dose-response functions and found that 10% of the Indian mainland falls into the very strong corrosivity band for steel.

The practical read: cast iron pieces are a Level 1 material, beautiful under a slab and heavy enough not to move in wind. The Ellis cast aluminium chairs are the same design language built for Level 2 and Level 3, and lighter to move for cleaning.

Cane Frames and PVC Weave Belong Under Cover, Not in Open Monsoon

Home Canvas is direct about this on its own product pages. The care block on the QV Popsicle Cane Table and Chairs Set, a cane frame with PVC weaving at ₹39,995, states that cane, metal and cast iron are suggested for covered outdoor areas and should not sit in direct sunlight and rain for prolonged durations.

Two separate materials are failing for two separate reasons in an exposed cane-and-resin piece. The cane frame is a natural fibre that absorbs moisture, swells, and supports mould once it stays damp. The PVC weave degrades under UV.

The way plastics fail outdoors is worth understanding, because it is counterintuitive. A four-year outdoor weathering study by Kim and colleagues, published in Polymers in 2022, exposed polycarbonate, polypropylene, PBT and HDPE to a total UV dose of 1,020 MJ/m² at 315 to 400 nm. Tensile strength held up reasonably. Fracture strain did not. Retention fell to 17% for polycarbonate, 20% for HDPE, 27% for PBT and 47% for polypropylene. The authors identified fracture strain retention as the key index of degradation.

Translated for a balcony: sun-aged plastic weave does not get visibly weaker. It gets brittle. It looks fine, then a strand snaps under a normal sit. That study covered Korea and did not test PVC, so treat it as the mechanism rather than a PVC-specific number. The behaviour is the same family of photo-oxidative damage.

Why FRP Is the Pick for a Fully Exposed Terrace, and Where It Falls Short

Fibre Reinforced Plastic is a composite of glass fibre set in a cured resin, moulded as one continuous shell rather than joined from parts. No joints means no water traps, and no metal means nothing to rust. The honest limitation is that the surface layer does the protecting, not the fibre. A 2025 study by Lukachevskaia and colleagues in Polymers exposed glass fibre-reinforced laminates to 2,000 hours of UVA and UVB irradiation at 7.88 W/m². Flexural strength retention fell to 64% and surface roughness increased by 241.2%. Basalt fibre laminate in the same test retained 95%.

That study used bare epoxy laminate with no gelcoat, under continuous chamber irradiation, which is harsher than real weathering. That is exactly the point. A finished FRP piece survives because of the gelcoat and the UV stabilisers in it. Strip that layer through abrasive cleaning or buy a piece with a thin one, and the fibre underneath starts to bloom and chalk. FRP is also not a natural material, and deep gouges need a specialist to repair rather than a sand-and-refinish at home.

Solid Wood Outdoors Is a Moisture Question, Not a Species Question

The temptation on a terrace is to buy a wooden table because it looks right. The physics are unforgiving.

Chapter 14 of the USDA Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook sets out the numbers. Wood reaches fibre saturation at about 30% moisture content, and fully air-dried wood at a maximum of 20% provides a reasonable margin of safety against fungal damage. Decay fungi grow fastest between 25°C and 35°C, which is the ambient range across most of India for most of the year. The handbook is explicit that warm, humid climates raise decay hazard.

An Indian monsoon on an unshaded terrace pushes exposed wood past 20% and holds it there for weeks. Add a temperature band that is optimal for the fungi and the outcome is not in doubt. This is why a solid wood piece like the Louis Patio Table in mango wood at ₹39,995, listed in the outdoor collection, is a covered-balcony proposition and not a roof-terrace one. The Finish Buys the Outdoor Life, Not the Material

Two cast aluminium chairs from different makers can differ by years of service life with identical metal underneath. The variable is the coating.

The AAMA 2604 specification, published by what is now the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance, is the useful benchmark. To qualify, a coating on architectural aluminium must survive five years of South Florida exposure, mounted at 45 degrees facing south below latitude 27°N, and come back with colour change of no more than 5 Delta E units, gloss retention of at least 30%, a chalk rating no worse than No. 8 under ASTM D4214 Method A, and 3,000 hours of salt spray resistance. AAMA 2605 is the tier above it, requiring longer natural exposure and tighter limits.

Almost no consumer furniture is sold with an AAMA rating. That is not the point. The point is that a real coating standard exists, that it is defined by years of outdoor exposure rather than marketing language, and that "powder coated" on its own tells you nothing about which tier a finish would reach. Ask what the pretreatment was, whether the coating is polyester or super-durable polyester, and whether the piece has been salt-spray tested. A seller who can answer is a seller worth buying from.

The Monsoon Routine That Actually Matters

  1. Move what can be moved before the first heavy front. Cane, wood and upholstered pieces go under cover for the season. This single step prevents more damage than every other item on this list combined.

  2. Check coated metal for chips every four weeks through monsoon. A rust bloom starts at a single breach in the coating, usually on a leg end or a weld. Touch it up early; a chip that goes unnoticed through one season becomes a structural problem in three.

  3. Wipe with a damp cloth, never a detergent or an abrasive. Home Canvas care instructions specify a moist cloth and warn against detergent and heavy cleansers on cane, metal and cast iron. On FRP the reason is stronger: abrasive cleaning removes the gelcoat layer that provides UV protection.

  4. Lift furniture off standing water. Water pooling around a leg end wicks upward, and on hollow steel legs it enters and corrodes from inside where you cannot see it.

  5. Dry cane and wood fully after cleaning. Mould needs moisture and mild temperature. Indian ambient temperature supplies one of those permanently, so moisture is the only variable you control.

  6. Re-oil wood at the end of monsoon, not during it. Sealing moisture in is worse than leaving the surface open.
