How to Choose a Sofa for an Indian Apartment

Most sofa buying guides tell you how to size a sofa to a room. Almost none tell you how to get it into the room, which is the failure that actually costs money. A sofa that is 5 cm too deep for your doorway is not a design problem. It is a sofa standing in the corridor while somebody works out whether the legs come off.

So this guide runs in the order the decisions actually matter. Proportion first, because it rules out most of the catalogue. Then the delivery access check, which rules out most of what is left. Then comfort, frame and configuration.

The short version. Size the sofa to about two thirds of the wall it sits against. Then measure your narrowest doorway and check it against the sofa's two smaller dimensions, not its length. Then decide between a two seater plus a chair and an L shape, which in a small Indian flat is usually a delivery decision as much as a layout one.

What is the 2/3 rule for sofas?

The 2/3 rule for a sofa says it should occupy about two thirds of the wall or the space it sits against, leaving the remaining third open. A 9 foot wall, roughly 274 cm, suits a sofa of around 6 feet, or 183 cm.

It works because a wall that is fully occupied reads as crowded and a wall that is a third occupied reads as unfurnished. Two thirds is the ratio that looks resolved.

One clarification, because there are three different "2/3 rules" in circulation and they get confused constantly.

  • Sofa to wall. The sofa is two thirds the length of the wall. This one.

  • Coffee table to sofa. The coffee table is one half to two thirds the length of the sofa. A different ratio between different objects.

  • A third version applied to heights. This one is simply wrong. Heights are set by seat cushion and sofa back references, not by ratios.

If you are sizing a whole seating group, you will use the first two together, and they compound. A 274 cm wall gives you a 183 cm sofa, which then gives you a coffee table of roughly 91 to 122 cm. Our guide to proportion and dimensions in an Indian apartment covers how the rest of the room resolves around that.

What size sofa fits in a small living room?

Work from the wall, not from the seat count.

India's Model Building Bye-Laws set a minimum habitable room area of 9.50 sq m with a minimum width of 2.40 m for plots above 50 sq m. Plenty of flats are built close to that, which means the shortest usable wall in a living room can genuinely be 2.4 m. Applying the two thirds rule to real wall lengths gives you this.

Wall length Sofa length at two thirds What that is
2.4 m / 240 cm about 160 cm A two seater
3.0 m / 300 cm about 200 cm A compact three seater
3.6 m / 360 cm about 240 cm A full three seater, or a two seater plus a chair
4.2 m / 420 cm about 280 cm Three seater plus a lounge chair, or an L shape

These are derived by applying the two thirds convention to the wall lengths, not measured from any standard, so treat them as a starting band rather than a specification.

A note on seat counts. A "three seater" is not a fixed length. Across the Home Canvas range a three seater runs from 178 cm on the Amelia to 231 cm on the Hygge. That is a 53 cm spread inside one label. Buy the centimetres, not the noun.

The two seater plus chair option. On a 3.6 m wall, a 160 cm two seater and a lounge chair often beat a single 240 cm sofa. Two pieces pull apart around a beam, a door swing or a corner in a way one long piece cannot, and they give you two seating directions instead of one. That trade is covered properly in our guide to accent and lounge chairs.

Will my sofa fit through the door and the lift?

This is the check nobody publishes and the one that turns a delivery into an argument. It takes five minutes and it should happen before you look at a single product photograph.

The key insight: a sofa's length is almost irrelevant to whether it fits through a door. A sofa goes through a doorway either upright or turned on its side, so what matters is its two smaller dimensions, the depth and the height. Whichever of those is smaller is the number that has to clear the door.

The Model Building Bye-Laws set minimum doorway widths for habitable rooms at 0.90 m on plots above 50 sq m, and 0.80 m on plots up to 50 sq m. Kitchen, bath and WC doorways can be as narrow as 0.75 m. So an 80 cm door is a legal, common, real thing to have to get a sofa through.

Run our own pieces against it.

Sofa Length Depth Height Governing dimension Through an 80 cm door Through a 90 cm door
Amelia 3 Seater 178 cm 83 cm 84 cm 83 cm No Yes, 7 cm to spare
Hygge Sofa 231 cm 89 cm 78 cm 78 cm Yes, 2 cm to spare Yes
Vero Sectional 213 cm 277 cm 84 cm Modular In sections In sections

Read that table twice. The Hygge is 53 cm longer than the Amelia and passes through a narrower door, because its height is lower. The biggest sofa is not the hardest to deliver. The one with the largest smallest dimension is.

The five measurements to take before you buy.

  1. Every doorway on the route, including the building entrance, the flat door and the living room door. Measure the clear opening with the door open, not the frame, and subtract for any door stop or handle that protrudes.

  2. The lift. Car width, car depth, door width, and internal height. The bye-laws regulate stairways and passages but do not set a minimum residential lift car size, which is exactly why lifts vary so much and why you cannot assume.

  3. The staircase, as the fallback. For flats and group housing the minimum stairway width is 1.25 m, but the number that fails a delivery is usually the landing turn rather than the run.

  4. The corridor, at 1.00 m minimum for a dwelling unit, and specifically any right angle turn in it. A long sofa fails at corners, not in straight runs.

  5. The tightest single point on the whole route. That one number is your budget. Everything else is irrelevant.

Then add margin. Two people carrying a sofa need hand room. A 2 cm clearance on paper is a zero clearance in practice. Aim for at least 5 cm on the governing dimension, more if there is a turn involved.

What to do when it does not fit. Removable legs buy 8 to 15 cm of height, and many sofas have them, so ask. A modular or sectional design arrives in pieces and assembles inside, which is the honest reason modular sofas exist in dense cities. And a sofa built to your access dimensions through made to order costs less than a sofa that cannot be delivered, which has a return cost and a replacement cost and no seat in between.

Crane delivery through a balcony exists and is expensive. It is worth knowing it is possible. It is not worth planning around.

What is the 2-2-1 rule for sofas?

Ask this question in India and in the United States and you will get two completely different answers, which is worth knowing before you follow one.

In international design guidance, 2-2-1 most often describes a throw pillow arrangement on a three seat sofa: two large pillows at the outer corners, two medium inside them, one lumbar or statement pillow in the centre. A second, less common reading describes a whole room layout of two primary seating pieces, two accent chairs and one central anchor.

In Indian retail, 2+2+1 means something entirely different and far more practical. It is a sofa set configuration: a two seater, a second two seater, and a single seat. It sits alongside 3+1+1, which is a three seater plus two singles, and 3+2 for a smaller room. This is the language Indian showrooms and listings actually use, and it is why "sofa set" is searched roughly twice as often here as "sofa" on its own.

So if you searched the 2-2-1 rule wanting to know how to arrange a seating set and got advice about cushions, that is the gap. The configuration reading is the Indian one.

Which configuration suits a small flat. 3+1+1 gives you the most seats but three separate footprints to place, and the two singles usually end up against walls where nobody chooses to sit. 2+1 plus a good lounge chair almost always works better under 4 m of wall, because every seat faces the conversation. Buy seats people will use rather than seats that count.

Is an L-shaped sofa a good idea in a small flat?

Sometimes, and the honest answer depends on one thing: whether the corner it goes into is a corner you were already wasting.

It works when the room has a genuine corner doing nothing, when you want maximum seating per square foot, and when the L can sit against two walls so it does not interrupt any walking route. In that situation an L shape is the most efficient seating in the room by a wide margin.

It does not work when the L has to float in the room, when the return leg crosses a doorway or a walking line, or when the room is narrow enough that the return leg leaves under a metre of passage in front of it. Our Vero Sectional has a 277 cm return, which needs a genuinely large room and is not a small flat piece.

Three things people underestimate.

  • An L shape fixes your layout permanently. A two seater and a chair can be rearranged when the room's use changes. An L shape decides the room once.

  • The return leg eats the walking route. Measure the gap between the return and whatever faces it. Under 1.00 m and the room will feel wrong even though the seat count went up.

  • Delivery. A one piece L shape is the single hardest object to get into a flat. A modular one arrives in sections and is the practical answer, which is why modular exists.

The compact alternative most people do not consider: a two seater plus a chaise or an ottoman. You get the stretch out function of an L, and you can move the ottoman when the room needs the floor back.

Seat depth, arm width and back height

Three numbers decide whether a sofa is comfortable for the way you actually sit.

Seat depth. A shallow seat, roughly 50 to 55 cm, suits upright sitting and shorter users, and it is the right choice in a small room because the whole sofa is shallower. A deep seat, 60 cm and up, suits lounging and curling up and needs cushions to be usable upright. The test is whether your back reaches the backrest with your feet flat on the floor. If it does not, the seat is too deep for you, whatever the specification says.

Seat depth is also the number that decides your total footprint. A sofa 10 cm shallower gives you 10 cm of extra corridor for its whole length, which in a narrow room matters more than the length does.

Arm width. Slim arms of 10 to 15 cm can add a full seat's worth of usable length compared with chunky arms of 25 to 30 cm on the same external footprint. In a small flat, slim arms are close to free seating. Wide flat arms have their own argument, which is that they hold a cup and a book, but you are paying for that in centimetres.

Back height. A low back, under about 80 cm, keeps sightlines open and makes a small room read larger. It gives less neck support. A high back gives support and divides the room visually. In a compact flat, low usually wins, and a lower back also makes the sofa easier to get through a door, as the table above shows.

Seat height we have covered elsewhere: the Amelia sits at 46 cm, and a lounge chair in the same room should sit one to two inches under that.

Solid wood or engineered frame?

The frame is the part you never see and the part that decides how long the sofa lasts.

Solid wood frames take repeated load, hold joints and screws over years of use, and can be repaired and reupholstered. That last point matters more than it sounds: a sofa with a sound frame can be recovered twice, which changes the cost over a decade completely. Most Home Canvas pieces are built in solid wood throughout, in the species that suit Indian conditions, and which those are is covered in our guide to choosing furniture wood by climate. A small number of our pieces include components that use engineered wood where it is the right material for that part.

Engineered wood is dimensionally stable, consistent, and entirely appropriate in specific components. Where it becomes a problem is in the load bearing structure of a piece expected to last, particularly in a humid climate, because the failure mode is at the joints rather than in the panel.

What to ask. Not "is it solid wood", which gets a yes too easily, but "what is the frame made of, and is it solid throughout or in parts". A maker who knows will tell you plainly.

Two things worth more than the frame material on a delivery route. Whether the legs detach, and whether the piece is modular. Both are construction decisions and both decide whether the sofa can get in at all.

If the sofa sits near a balcony door that stays open in the rains, the monsoon care guide is the relevant one, because upholstery and frames both move with humidity.

Sofa, sofa set, or 3+1+1?

The words matter here because they change what you find.

Sofa is the single piece. Searched heavily, and the term international guidance is written in.

Sofa set is the Indian retail default and is searched roughly twice as often here as "sofa" alone. It means a matched group, usually sold together.

3+1+1, 2+2+1, 3+2 are set configurations, read as seat counts per piece. A 3+1+1 is a three seater plus two single seats. This is the language of Indian showrooms.

5 seater sofa is the same idea expressed as a total, and it is searched more than "sectional sofa" is here.

Sectional and L shape describe the shape rather than the set. Modular means it comes apart, which as covered above is a delivery property as much as a design one.

If you are searching one and finding nothing useful, search another. Everything sits together in the sofa collection.

Sofas in hotels, restaurants, resorts and offices

The specification changes when the sofa is used by strangers all day.

In a hotel lobby or resort lounge, seating is grouped rather than pushed to a wall, so the two thirds wall rule does not apply and reach does: every seat needs a surface within arm's length. Back heights go lower in lobbies to keep sightlines to reception, and higher in lounge corners where the sofa is defining a zone.

In a restaurant or bar, banquette and sofa seating is chosen against turnover. A 60 cm deep seat is comfortable, which is a problem when you need the table back. Seat depth around 50 to 55 cm and a firmer fill keeps the sit pleasant and finite.

In an office reception or breakout, the sofa doubles as a laptop perch, which argues for a firmer seat, a lower depth and an arm at a height that clears a side table.

Across all of them, the delivery check matters more, not less. Commercial fitouts run to a date, and a sofa that cannot enter the service lift is a project delay rather than an inconvenience. Take the access measurements at survey stage.

Home Canvas has supplied over 500 bars, restaurants and cafes, and works with venues including Taj Hotels, Hilton, Grand Mercure, Smoke House Deli, Socials, Godrej and Brigade Group. Where a stock length or depth does not clear the access route, custom sizing is the standard answer rather than the exotic one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 2/3 rule for sofas?
A sofa should occupy roughly two thirds of the wall or space it sits against, leaving about a third open. On a 274 cm wall that gives a sofa of around 183 cm. It works because a fully occupied wall reads crowded and a third occupied wall reads unfurnished. Note that there are three different rules called the 2/3 rule in circulation: this one, the coffee table rule where the table is one half to two thirds of the sofa's length, and a version applied to heights which is simply incorrect.
What size sofa fits in a small living room?
Measure the wall and take two thirds. A 2.4 m wall, which is the minimum habitable room width under India's Model Building Bye-Laws, gives about 160 cm, which is a two seater. A 3.0 m wall gives about 200 cm, a compact three seater. A 3.6 m wall gives about 240 cm. Do not shop by seat count, because a three seater ranges from 178 cm to 231 cm across our own range alone. Buy the centimetres.
Will my sofa fit through the door?
Check the sofa's two smaller dimensions, its depth and its height, not its length, because a sofa goes through a doorway upright or on its side. Whichever of those two is smaller is your governing number. Indian minimum doorway widths for habitable rooms are 0.90 m on plots above 50 sq m and 0.80 m on smaller plots. Measure every doorway on the route, the lift, the staircase and any corridor turn, take the tightest single point, and leave at least 5 cm of margin for hands.
Is an L-shaped sofa a good idea in a small flat?
Only if the corner it fills was already wasted space and the L can sit against two walls without crossing a walking route. It gives the most seating per square foot when that is true. It fails when the return leg leaves under a metre of passage in front of it, or when it has to float in the room. An L shape also fixes your layout permanently where a two seater and a chair can be rearranged. And a one piece L is the hardest object to deliver into a flat, which is why modular versions exist.
What is the 2-2-1 rule for sofas?
It means two different things in two markets. In international design guidance it usually describes a throw pillow arrangement on a three seater: two large, two medium, one lumbar. In Indian retail, 2+2+1 is a sofa set configuration, meaning two two seaters plus a single seat, alongside 3+1+1 and 3+2. If you searched the rule wanting seating advice and received cushion advice, that is why. The configuration reading is the Indian one.
How deep should a sofa seat be?
Around 50 to 55 cm for upright sitting, and 60 cm or more for lounging. The test is whether your back reaches the backrest with your feet flat on the floor; if it does not, the seat is too deep for you regardless of what the listing says. Seat depth also sets your total footprint, so a sofa 10 cm shallower returns 10 cm of floor along its entire length, which in a narrow room matters considerably more than a shorter length would.
Is a solid wood sofa frame better than an engineered one?
For the load bearing structure of a sofa you expect to keep, solid wood holds joints and screws over years of use and can be repaired and reupholstered, which changes the cost over a decade because a sound frame can be recovered twice. Engineered wood is dimensionally stable and entirely appropriate in specific components. The useful question to ask a maker is not "is it solid wood" but "what is the frame made of, and is it solid throughout or in parts".
Should I buy a sofa set or separate pieces?
Separate pieces usually win in a compact flat. A 3+1+1 set gives the highest seat count but three footprints to place, and the two single seats often end up against walls where nobody chooses to sit. A two seater plus a well chosen lounge chair puts every seat in the conversation and can be rearranged when the room's use changes. Sets win when you want visual coherence quickly and have the wall length to place all three pieces properly.

The short version

Take two thirds of your wall length and that is your sofa length, which on the 2.4 m minimum room width common in Indian flats means a two seater rather than a three. Then measure the narrowest point on the delivery route and check it against the sofa's depth and height rather than its length, because a 231 cm sofa with a 78 cm height gets through a door that a 178 cm sofa with an 83 cm depth will not. Leave 5 cm of margin. Then decide seat depth by whether your back reaches the backrest with your feet flat, keep the arms slim if the room is tight, and ask what the frame is made of rather than whether it is solid. If the access route rules out everything you like, that is the case for having one built to your measurements.
