Metal chairs are decided by the coating, not the metal
A metal cafe chair does not really fail as metal. It fails where the coating is breached, and then the metal underneath goes to work. So the specification question is never "steel or aluminium" first. It is what finish, applied how, and where the chair will live.
Distance from the sea changes that answer more than anything else. The practical rules follow from that. Inland and covered, powder-coated mild steel is the workhorse. Coastal, specify galvanised or stainless substrate under the coating, not just a thicker coat. Everywhere, ask the supplier for matched touch-up paint at the time of order, because a chipped frame becomes a corrosion site and a chair you catch in week one is a chair you keep.

Cane looks best, moves most, and belongs under cover
Cane is the material that makes a room feel considered. It is also the least forgiving of standing moisture, and the honest version of this comparison has to say so plainly.
The rule is simple: a cane seat belongs indoors or under a genuine roof, with air moving through it. Cane in open monsoon will sag. Cane that stays damp in a tight weave where air cannot reach will grow mould before it rots. Laboratory testing of rattan puts volumetric swelling between roughly 14% and 27% from oven-dry to full saturation, with the denser, larger-diameter canes performing best on both mould resistance and decay (Ahmed et al., Forests, 2022). Matching material to seating zone
Stop thinking about the venue as one space. Think in three exposure zones, because each one has a different right answer.
