What is acacia wood, and which acacia are we actually talking about?
Acacia is a genus of over a thousand species, not a single timber, which means the word on a product label tells you far less than buyers assume. A wooden bowl sold as acacia, a flooring plank sold as acacia and a dining table sold as acacia can be three different woods with different densities, different colours and different behaviour.
The furniture acacia you will meet in India is almost always one of three plantation timbers: Acacia mangium, Acacia auriculiformis, or the hybrid cross between them. This is worth separating from the acacia most Indians picture. Babool, Acacia nilotica, is the thorny native tree of North Indian field bunds and roadsides. It is a different wood with a different working character, and it is not what a modern acacia dining table is made from. Search behaviour reflects the confusion: in India, "acacia tree" runs at roughly 12,100 searches a month against 5,400 for "acacia wood" and 1,000 for "acacia wood furniture." Most people arrive at the timber through the tree.
The practical implication is that species alone is a weak buying signal. Two acacia tables can differ more from each other than an acacia table differs from a mango one. What separates them is age at felling, provenance, seasoning and finish.
Why Indian workshops standardise on acacia

The teak-like finish, and why acacia takes it so well
The Indian market wants the look of teak. Acacia is the wood that gets closest at a price that ordinary households can actually reach, and the reason is structural.
Acacia is diffuse-porous, meaning its vessels are distributed fairly evenly through the growth ring rather than concentrated in a large early-wood band. Practically, that gives a more uniform surface for stain and sealer to sit on than a strongly ring-porous wood like oak, where the open pores drink stain unevenly and produce a striped result. Acacia's natural colour also runs in the golden-brown to reddish-brown range that a walnut or teak-toned finish only has to nudge rather than transform.

The honest caveat is that a finish is a cosmetic and protective layer, not a stability layer. Why kiln drying is the whole performance story
All timber responds to the seasons. A well-made acacia table stays flat for a decade because the wood was brought to a stable moisture content before it was worked, and because the joinery was designed around the movement that remains.
The Wood Handbook defines the objective of wood drying plainly: to bring the moisture content close to the expected value that a finished product will have in service. Air drying alone in an Indian yard gets timber roughly to the local outdoor equilibrium, which in a monsoon-belt city is considerably wetter than the inside of an air-conditioned dining room. A piece built from that timber will keep drying after it reaches your house, and shrinkage after assembly is what opens joints, splits panels and cups tops.

The second half of the answer is design. A well-made solid wood top is not one rigid slab bolted immovably to a rigid frame. It is fixed in a way that lets it expand and contract across its width without splitting, using slotted fixings, buttons or figure-eight fasteners. Ask about this. A maker who has thought about it will have an answer.
How to tell solid acacia from veneer or an engineered lookalike
This is the single most useful skill for buying acacia well, and it takes under a minute on a showroom floor. Four checks, in order of reliability.
Read the end grain at the edge. On a solid board, the grain pattern on the top surface should continue around and down the edge, and the end grain should show the same growth rings and pores as the face, running through the thickness. On a veneered panel, the top face pattern stops dead at a thin edge banding, and the edge shows a different grain, a colour break, or a suspiciously uniform strip. Get your eye down to the level of the edge and look along it.
Look for repeating pattern across the surface. Veneer is sliced in continuous sheets and applied in sequence, so identical knots, identical grain arcs and identical figure often repeat at regular intervals across a large top. Solid boards jointed together are individual, so their grain does not repeat. A large top with a perfectly matched, evenly rhythmic pattern is a flag worth following up.
Check the underside. Manufacturers finish what customers see. On a solid table the underside will show real grain, plane marks or sanding, and often boards jointed with visible glue lines. On a veneered engineered panel the underside is frequently a plain, featureless backing, a different lighter timber, or a printed surface. If the underside and the top do not look like they came from the same tree, they did not.
Feel the edge profile and the weight. A solid top can carry a shaped, chamfered or live edge because there is real material to cut into. A veneered panel usually has a square or minimally profiled edge, because shaping it would cut straight through the face veneer into the core. Solid acacia at 585 kg/m³ also feels appreciably heavier than a hollow-core or particle-core panel of the same size.
A fifth check applies to anything sold as a set: lift a chair and set it down. A solid acacia chair has a certain dead, dense weight to it. A veneered or engineered frame feels lighter than it looks.
None of this makes veneer or engineered wood bad. Caring for acacia furniture in an Indian home

Keep acacia out of direct sun through glass. Prolonged UV bleaches a finish unevenly over time, so a top that sits half in a sun patch and half in shade will read as two different colours before long. Keep the whole surface in the same light. Move the piece, or move the curtain.
Do not park it against a monsoon-exposed wall or an open doorway. What matters is not the average humidity in the room but the gradient across the piece. Keeping both faces of a top in the same air is what keeps it even.
Wipe spills immediately, and never leave standing water. Sealer and lacquer are water-resistant, not waterproof. Water that sits will eventually reach the wood through the finish or at a joint.
Skip the detergent. Household cleaners and strong solvents strip the finish, and stripping the finish removes the very layer that slows moisture exchange. Mild soap and water at most.
Inspect joints at the start and end of monsoon. Those are the two moments of fastest moisture change. A joint caught while it is slightly loose can be reglued and cramped. One left until the tenon has worn oval is a repair.
Run a fan or dehumidifier in a closed damp room. If a room stays shut and damp for weeks, air movement does more for the furniture than anything you apply to it.
