Lighting a Room Properly: Ambient, Task and Accent Layers, and Materials That Age Well
TL;DR: Layered lighting means running three systems in one room: an ambient layer that sets the base level, a task layer that puts light where work happens, and an accent layer that reveals shape and texture. India's own code of practice, IS 3646 (Part 1): 1992, gives interior lighting three jobs: keep people safe, make visual tasks easy, and create an appropriate visual environment. One ceiling light does the first and fails the other two. The material matters as much as the fitting: a 2022 Heritage Science study found nearly every wood tested visibly changed colour after the equivalent of eight hours a day for a year at 200 lux, with hardwoods holding up better than softwoods.
Layered lighting is the practice of lighting a room with three systems that switch independently: ambient, task and accent. Most Indian homes run one. The ceiling light goes on at 7 pm, the room sits at one flat level until bedtime, and the sofa, the reading chair and the dining table all get identical treatment despite doing completely different work.
The Bureau of Indian Standards has been clear about why this fails since 1992. IS 3646 (Part 1): 1992 states that the lighting of an interior should fulfil three functions: ensure the safety of people in the interior, facilitate performance of visual tasks, and aid the creation of an appropriate visual environment. One fixture, one level, one switch cannot deliver three outcomes.
What are the three layers of lighting, and why does one ceiling light fail?
The three layers are not a decorating idea. They map onto definitions the Indian standard already carries.
The ambient layer is general lighting. IS 3646 (Part 1): 1992 defines general lighting as lighting designed to illuminate the whole of an area uniformly, without provision for special local requirements. This is the base you navigate by, and the layer you should notice least. Its job is to stop the corners reading as holes.
The task layer is local lighting. The same standard defines local lighting as illuminating a particular small area which usually does not extend far beyond the visual task, using a desk as its example. This is the floor lamp beside the reading chair. It serves one activity in one place.
The accent layer is directional light for form. IS 3646 lists, among its triggers for local lighting, the case where perception of forms and textures requires strongly directional light. This is the layer that makes a cane weave read as a weave rather than a brown blur, and the one almost nobody installs.
The standard even anticipates the argument. Its 1966 companion, IS 3646 (Part 2), notes that where work is localised the recommended value applies to the task only, and "need not, and sometimes should not, be the level of illumination used throughout the interior." That is an argument for layering, written down in India in 1966.
How much light does an Indian living room actually need?
Less than most people install, and in fewer places.

Two things matter more than the numbers.
First, where you measure. The standard specifies that where the precise height and location of tasks is not known, the value applies on a horizontal plane 0.9 m above floor level. Not at the ceiling. Not at the bulb. At roughly side-table height. A ceiling fitting throwing 2,000 lumens and a table lamp throwing 400 lumens at your book can deliver the same reading light, and the lamp does it without flooding the room.
Second, the standard's own honesty. Its section covering hotels, restaurants, shops and homes opens by saying the lighting of some of these locations "will be determined primarily by aesthetic considerations and the illumination recommendations should be taken as a guide only." BIS is telling you a living room is not an office. Treat 150 lux at the reading chair as a floor to clear, not a level to flood to.
The absolute floor is lower than expected. IS 3646 (Part 1): 1992 notes that roughly 20 lux is enough to discern the features of a human face, and treats 20 lux as the minimum for all non-working interiors. Everything above that is a choice.
One subtlety the standards handle better than most decorating advice: the Canadian Conservation Institute's guidance on light as an agent of deterioration notes that a dark surface needs up to three times the light of a pale one for the same visibility, and a viewer of 65 up to three times what a viewer of 25 needs. A dark Sheesham dining table in a home with older parents is a genuinely harder visual target. That is a task-layer problem, and a brighter ceiling light is the wrong answer to it.
What colour temperature and CRI should you choose for wood and cane?
Warm, and high enough to render the wood honestly.
IS 3646 (Part 1): 1992 classes correlated colour temperature in three bands: warm below 3300 K, intermediate from 3300 K to 5300 K, cold above 5300 K. The daylight bulbs sold across India at 6500 K sit firmly in the cold band.
The reason they feel wrong at home is not taste. It is level-dependent. CCI's guidance states that at low light levels viewers prefer warmer light similar to incandescent, around 2800 K, and that only as illumination climbs to several thousand lux does preference shift to 5000 K or higher. A living room at 150 lux is a low-light-level space. A 6500 K bulb runs showroom colour at lounge brightness, and that mismatch is what reads as clinical.
On colour rendering, IS 3646 groups lamps by the CIE general colour rendering index, Ra. Group 1B covers Ra 80 to 90 and is specified wherever good colour rendering is required for reasons of appearance. CCI recommends a minimum CRI of 85 for museum display, and notes many museums specify above 90.
This is the number that matters most in a room built from Acacia, Sheesham and Mango. One more rule, in the standard's mandatory register: adjacent areas shall not be lit with sources of significantly different apparent colour unless a special effect is required. A 6500 K kitchen opening onto a 3000 K living room is not two moods. It is a fault line.
How do you build the ambient and task layers?
Spread the ambient layer, and put the task layer at the task.
The ambient layer's failure mode is a single high-output fixture at the geometric centre of the ceiling. It produces even illumination and no information. Every surface gets the same light from the same angle, so nothing has an edge.
Spread it across three or four low-output sources at different heights instead. IS 3646 names the fix for glare directly: use large-area, low-luminance luminaires, and non-glassy finishes on furniture and room surfaces. A large shade running a modest lamp does exactly that. A small bright bulb in a bare socket does the opposite. Then account for what the room takes back. IS 3646 recommends designing to a light loss factor of 0.8 in interiors with a fairly clean atmosphere and 0.7 where dust accumulates faster. In a Bengaluru flat with the windows open, a scheme that exactly hits its target on day one is under-lit by month eighteen.
For the task layer, sustained reading wants 300 lux at the page. You do not get there by making the room 300 lux. You get there with a desk lamp whose light lands where the page is. But a bright pool in a dark room is its own mistake, and the standard puts a floor under it: a task's immediate surroundings should preferably sit at no less than one third of the task luminance, and the peripheral field at no less than one tenth. A laptop screen in a black room breaks that ratio and your eyes pay for it. This is why they are layers and not alternatives.
How does the accent layer make wood and cane readable?
By coming from one direction, hard.
This is the layer that gets cut from the budget and does the most for a room made of natural materials. IS 3646 has a name for what it does: modelling. The standard says the appearance of interiors is improved when shapes are revealed clearly and shadows are formed without confusion, and that this occurs when the light flows noticeably more in one direction than in any other.
Read that again with a cane pendant in mind. A hand-woven cane shade lit flatly from a central ceiling fitting is a brown shape. The same shade lit from one side, or lit from within so the weave throws its pattern onto the wall, is the reason you bought it. The Cane Lamps range exists to do the second thing. Home Canvas uses cane in both hand-woven and pre-made woven components, and the whole visual argument of a woven piece is the gap between the strands. Flat light closes those gaps.
The same logic applies to grain. The Wooden Lamps range runs across teak, mango and natural wood, and grain is a texture, which means it is only visible when light rakes across it rather than hitting it square. One warning. CCI is blunt that any bright lamp shining in your eyes diminishes the visibility of the object you are looking at. An accent light you can see the source of is not an accent light. It is glare with a job title.
Which materials age well under artificial light?
Wood ages. The question is how fast, under which lamp, and whether you like where it ends up.
A 2022 study in Heritage Science by Cirule and colleagues at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry exposed birch, oak, spruce and pine to LED, incandescent and fluorescent lamps. At an irradiation dose of 0.6 Mlx h, which the authors state corresponds to roughly eight hours daily for one year at 200 lux, almost every wood crossed the 2 DE threshold at which the eye can see the colour has changed. The only exception was oak under a warm 3000 K LED.
Three findings are worth carrying home.
Hardwoods held up better than softwoods, across every lamp type, attributed to softwoods' higher lignin content. Home Canvas builds primarily in Acacia, Sheesham and Mango, all hardwoods, though none were among the species tested, so this is a direction rather than a measurement.
LEDs change wood less over the long run, and more at the start. The study found greater discolouration from LEDs in the initial phase but less at higher doses, concluding LEDs are the more acceptable choice. The older lamp types front-load their damage because they emit more ultraviolet.
Warm LEDs are not a preservation strategy. The warm 3000 K LED beat the cool 6500 K LED only at low dose, and the authors state the difference practically levelled off as exposure accumulated. Choose warm light because it looks right at domestic levels, not because it protects your table.
Your lamp is probably not the culprit anyway. CCI puts white LED ultraviolet output at 0 to 75 microwatts per lumen, rated very low, against 300 to 600 for daylight and still 400 to 500 for daylight through window glass. Ultraviolet does the structural damage: CCI's generalisation is that light fades, ultraviolet causes yellowing, chalking and disintegration, and infrared simply heats the surface. Outdoors, CCI puts wood in the medium ultraviolet band, greying and eroding at roughly 50 microns of surface per year. The sunbeam crossing your sideboard every afternoon does more in a month than your reading lamp does in a year.
Two facts make this manageable. The Heritage Science paper notes, citing the CIE, that wood is classified as low in responsivity to visible light while moderately to highly sensitive to ultraviolet, and that photodegradation is confined to a thin surface layer. It also notes that wood on display for a long time is not expected to change colour significantly in future. Your Acacia table does most of its moving in the first year or two, then settles.
Which is where BIS gets interesting. IS 3646 (Part 1): 1992 lists wood among light-sensitive museum exhibits and caps them at 150 lux maximum on the principal plane. The same standard family recommends 150 lux for casual reading at home. Identical number, opposite meaning: one is a ceiling, the other a target. That gap is the difference between a museum and a home. A museum's job is to stop the object changing. Home Canvas builds on the idea that homes are lived in, not looked at, and a piece that has warmed half a shade over five years has not failed.
Finishing does more work than people realise. Home Canvas uses sealer plus lacquer on most wooden products and PU on select ones. A high-gloss table under a point source is a mirror aimed at your own eyes. Metal is the easy case: powder-coating, paint and electroplating are effectively indifferent to light.
The honest summary is that nothing you buy will look identical in 2036. Fading is, as CCI puts it, irreversible, with no true recovery possible. The choice is not between change and no change. It is between change you designed for and change that surprises you.
